Santa Clarita Travel

Known fondly for those in the know as Awesometown and famous for our diets and zombies, Santa Clarita is a suburb northeast of Los Angeles that takes pride in truly being a suburb. There were only a handful of avenues for fun growing up if you wanted to go out: the mall, the bowling alley, the movie theater, or Six Flags (which lost its novelty quickly). However, the one thing that Santa Clarita has is an abundance of hiking trails that criss-cross the surrounding mountains.

When asked to create a series of travel posters, I knew that my hometown's natural beauty has to offer needed to be the star to draw in a crowd that wouldn't usually think of Santa Clarita as a travel destination.

Santa Clarita Sunrise / Jeff Turner

The biggest challenge was overcoming Santa Clarita's most well-known claim
to fame: the Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park. The views and images
used for the travel posters needed
to be memorable.

Chosen for the series were Towsley Canyon, for its breadth of views; Placerita Canyon, for its ever-changing landscape; and Vasquez Rocks, a hidden gem featured in such works as Star Trek, Blazing Saddles, Little Miss Sunshine, 24, and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

A Touted Triptych

The series was featured in the City Hall of Santa Clarita as part of a public artwork exhibit as a campaign to bring more tourism to the city.
